The highest Arctic temperature ever recorded, 40C (104F), was confirmed Monday by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The temperature was recorded on July 2 of this year in the Siberian town of Verkhoyansk.
Verkhoyansk held the previous record of 38C (100.4F) and also holds the record for the coldest temperature in Asia, -67.8C (-90.0F).
The high temperature in Verkhoyansk was in the middle of a heatwave in Siberia, which has seen record numbers of wildfires.
